| CARDINALITY AND INVARIANT SUBSPACES Louis de Branges de Bourcia* Abstract. A question which was posed by Felix Hausdorff [12] concerns the accessibility of the cardinality of an uncountable set from smaller cardinalities. If the set is not a union of a class of smaller cardinality of sets of smaller cardinality, the question is whether a greatest cardinality exists which is less than the cardinality of the given set. Although the question remains unanswered, and may indeed be unanswerable, satisfactory foundations of analysis are now obtained when the issue is left undecided. A generalization |
